The teacher recalled that she had black eyes and hair matted with blood, a description corroborated by a nurse who saw her on arrival after an ambulance brought her to nearby Mercy Hospital St. Louis. Is that just an interpretation or did they say anything that suggested to you that the fact that you had gone to a private school and grown up in an upper-middle-class situation meant that you could never at any point consider yourself low-income? [3] In high school there, Fierceton was a model student. I n November 2020, University of Pennsylvania graduate student Mackenzie Fierceton, 24, won the Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University. And because poverty and abuse are so pervasive in society and particularly in a country that has such a minimal social safety net and has so much violence. She was an independent student when she applied. Within a year of her arrest, another St. Louis-area hospital had granted her admitting privileges, and she was able to resume her medical career. [22] It went into greater detail about her past, providing more substantiation for her abuse allegations from teachers, fellow students and their parents, Carrie Brandt (the police detective who had investigated and arrested Morrison) and her allegations that Morrison had enabled Lovelace's sexual abuse. And thats again, like not because there isnt abuse or neglect going on in families that looked like mine, or biological families that looked like mine. What was the response from the readers of the paper? Mackenzie is the soap's first transgender character, added to the series after Stone wrote to executive producer Jason Herbison to pitch the character. "I think that we could contribute to the community, the broader Philadelphia community, and the West Philadelphia community more positively, instead of doing things that are not only undermining them but are actively policing them, and end up creating and perpetuating more violence," she told The Daily Pennsylvanian, the university's student newspaper. And we do know for sure that she was in touch with the university. The mother of a friend of Fierceton's recalls that when she told Morrison on the phone that she "was not interested" in hearing what Morrison had to say, she got angry and confrontational. Yeah. We started building this, and this is exactly who we built it for. She ruined her moms career. But her mother wasnt finished with her. In addition to reiterating many of the themes of comments made by her and her supporters in the previous articles, including criticism of the Rhodes and Penn investigations (the former of which Grim noted she was putting air quotes around when she mentioned it), she expressed a belief that her story had triggered a defensive anxiety in women like Finkelstein and White:[4]. RG: And so, like I mentioned earlier, I dont want to go over too much of the history that led up to your battle with Penn and with the Rhodes trust, because people can find that in The New Yorker article that came out recently, you went over that in some pretty decent length; in Katie Courics podcast in a recent interview there. The university writes: After those who knew Fierceton raised questions about her story, it was investigated not just once, but several times, and not just by Penn faculty and staff, but also the Rhodes Trust. But it doesnt mean you were always low-income, just that you are now. But I just had a bad feeling and I started to try to find more information. And she had gone to a private school growing up. I didnt really know what it was going to be, but I feel like its always good to have someone with you. [Laughs.] Its a very under-researched field. Our concern is instead with the conduct of our. RG: So you applied for your masters in social work and there was a question of whether to check the, what Ive learned is called the FGLI box: first-generation, low-income. Penn, she claimed, had leaked that information to the Inquirer whose editor-in-chief was married to Louisa Shepard, the university's news director, whom she named as a defendant along with Finkelstein, White, and the university's board of trustees. MF: So to me it was pretty clear that it likely came from them. It was: Shes a spoiled little brat. That is when I would trace it back to. Im part of a wrongful death lawsuit that was filed in August, 2020. And Im kind of one of the lucky ones where I had really expansive and thorough documentation for all the parts of this story. But I guess I cant say for sure. Nor is she obligated to meet their expectations of her. She arrives as a new student at Erinsborough High School and is connected to the . So you use what you have, uh, which are the definitions that were already out there. Like, I dont have the precise statistics in front of me, but if you asked people to guess at the number of people who will experience, say, two years of poverty in their life, people will miss it by magnitudes. MF: They have since claimed that that is not what they [laughs] insinuated, I believe my former lawyer spoke to it in The New Yorker piece. She added the additional detail that at the time of her first hospitalization, Fierceton had just failed her first AP Chemistry test. It didnt have any facts of the case. And just Deputy Provost Finkelstein saying: No. So they heard from her and immediately they call you into a meeting with the deputy provost at the time, Beth Winkelstein . Smith said he believed the university had decided before it began investigating that Fierceton's abuse allegations were false and that she had fabricated them with the goal of finding an easier way into Penn or another elite school. [3] The change in her living situation greatly complicated her college plans as she had no financial resources of her own. [24], In a statement to The Daily Pennsylvanian, the university said the New Yorker article "did not accurately reflect" the university's investigation of the issues raised by the Rhodes Trust. The article by reporter Rachel Aviv was called How an Ivy League School Turned Against a Student, and it tells the story of an extraordinary battle between Mackenzie and the University of Pennsylvania. And MacKenzie is the only one whos allowed to answer these questions. And like: Why are you considered an independent student? "[2], On her application, Fierceton recounted her background and the unexpected way it led to her becoming a foster child. We dont have ads, so we depend on our members 35,000 and counting to help us hold the powerful to account. And I dont remember all of the questions, but it was a really intense, rapid fire of really difficult and challenging questions. Mother and daughter both told the same stories they had earlier; Morrison depicted her daughter as "willful and intense", claiming she had bought and read many books to try to help her understand the issues she said Fierceton had. Its just so obvious that you fit the criteria for low-income, but it seems like they feel like you dont fit it in the spirit of how they want it. MF: You know, I believe the first people who said that was the Rhodes Trust. Cause I had assumed it was her. They reported it to the state's child-abuse hotline. His master's level university, Ivy College Pennsylvania, also failed to grant him the acquired master's degree . And I dont remember exactly what their statement was, but they disputed it. And now they have to face the fact that someone who looks like them, who shares all these identities with them, could be the source of all of this harm. And what happened after that? RG: Like questioning: How much blood? MF: Yeah, it was, things like that where I simplified all of these foster kids that youre living with a biological family who have kids, which I would say are foster siblings. Fierceton's life story, as well as her self-identification as a "first generation" college student, came under scrutiny by the university when an anonymous email alleged that Fierceton was not. Asked by the school's wellness director (who later told police she had seen insulting texts from Morrison on Fierceton's phone) about the reasons for the injuries, Fierceton said that she was "clumsy" but did not offer any details. She had had a fairly upper middle class life yet was working at multiple fast food restaurants and barely getting by. And then instantly people started picking her story apart. [Laughs.]. But it did open with these literary elements of what I was feeling like, and the experience I was having in those moments. And theyll openly talk about this. After her mother left, Fierceton got out of bed, found a spare set of keys and drove herself to school. [2] Afterwards Morrison changed her daughter's last name to her own. woman who won a coveted scholarship in the US to study at Oxford after claiming she was poor, overcame childhood abuse and grew up in foster care lost the opportunity after it emerged she was. MF: You know, in my personal experience, there were not very many kids who came from a background like me. Uh, my lawyer. But I guess I cant say for sure. RG: First of all, thats one box? "It is seven years later, and I am still having to prove and prove and prove what has happened to me." RG: Anything in particular jump out at you after having read back over that transcript? [26] In the second, he wrote, "[y]ou could also conclude from Mackenzie Fierceton's story that there is no actual empathy within elite institutions unless you perfectly fit into the trauma hierarchy they have created, which preferences the types of overcoming-adversity stories they can place in a brochure. Her admission to Oxford was unaffected, and she began her graduate studies in sociology there later in the year, with a Penn professor covering her tuition. And then she hired a law firm and eventually they were doing their own investigation for several months. Right. Thats not in question. "[2], In December, an anonymous 22-page letter was sent to the U.S. office of the Rhodes Trust, which administers the scholarship program. Or is that it separates two into one? Within days of the article being published, the universitys general counsel was in touch with Mackenzies mother. RG: Penn officials, of course, have said the interview was appropriate. Penn shut down in-person classes and gave students living on campus a week to find somewhere else to live until it was safe to return. As a result she withdrew from the Rhodes Scholarship; a sympathetic Penn faculty member has paid her Oxford tuition in its stead.[2]. And in the U.S., there is much more pressure to pull kids out of homes, right? We want to think of it as: If you were ever rich, youre always rich; if youre ever poor, youre always poor. While the investigators understood, they also wrote that the limited information she provided may have been more likely to elicit an answer favorable to her. Later, another Whitfield parent Morrison had talked to told this woman that she believed Fierceton had done this to get admitted to an Ivy League college, an idea which she found preposterous. The situation was further complicated by a lack of cell phone service in the basement, requiring students to team up and verbally relay information from the 9-1-1 operator to a professor performing CPR on Driver and back to a student posted just outside the door. She is poor, but she has not been poor for long enough. My understanding is there were two anonymous emails. Fierceton is the 31st Penn student to be chosen as a Rhodes Scholar since the distinguished program's start in 1902. Her mothers name was entered into a registry of abusers. Penn again spoke with Morrison and, this time as well, the St. Louis County prosecutor who had decided to drop the charges, without informing Fierceton, which the university defended as standard practice not to identify witnesses interviewed. And youre getting instruction from a university official that that's how you're supposed to fill it out, that's what the definition says online.
